Got any burning questions?

Below we've compiled our most Frequently Asked Questions, asked by volunteers, staff members and scholars alike. Our FAQs cover questions from whether you can join one of our projects, to the procedures we have in place to make sure you're safe when you join us. We have categorised the questions into six sections and you can use the buttons below to skip to each section, or alternatively, scroll down the page to look over them all.
If you still have questions or simply want to discuss our projects in greater detail, please feel free to contact us and we'll be more than happy to assist you.

Can I join a CCC project?

  • I don't have UK citizenship - can I still join a CCC project?

We are an international organisation that welcomes volunteers of all nationalities! The ability to speak and read English is however important as all expedition training is given in English.

  • I don't have any prior science training, is this a problem?

We do not require any of our volunteers to have any dive or science knowledge or experience prior to joining a CCC expedition. All of the training you need will be provided on our project sites or before through online lectures.

  • How old do I need to be?

We have a minimum age allowance of 18 years old for individual applicants. We will occasionally make exceptions for those under this age if they attend with a responsible adult who is willing to act in loco parentis.

We also offer opportunities for those under 18 to join us as part of a group, you can find out more details here.

  • I have a medical condition, can I still join?

Everyone who joins us must go through our medical clearance procedure. If you are concerned that your condition may affect this just get in touch and we'll be happy to discuss it.

  • Can I join you for free or in exchange for helping out on site?

We rely on a combination of grants and your fees to fund the work that we do. As we are keen to employ local people wherever possible unfortunately it is not possible for us to offer work/stay exchange programmes. You would however be welcome to take a look at our international staff roles on our careers page.

  • I can't swim will this be a problem?

We do need you to be able to swim.

As a PADI centre we abide by PADI rules which require you to have basic swimming skills and be able to comfortably maintain yourself in the water. As part of the PADI course our Scuba Instructor will assess this by having you swim 200 metres/yards (or 300 metres/yards in mask, fins and snorkel).

  • I can't dive can I still join?

You do not need to be a certified diver to join us. We have Scuba Instructors on site ready to give you all the training you need.

  • Can I do my Degree/Masters thesis with you?

We are happy to support thesis students on site whenever possible. Just head on over to our Independent Degree Research page for more information.

  • Can I use your data for a personal project?

Absolutely, all of our data is open source and we encourage students to make use of it! Just get in touch and we'll send you a permission form for completion.

  • Can I join you as staff?

We have a number of staff roles that become available sporadically during the year. Check out our careers page to see which roles are currently available.

  • When can I join?

We have set start dates in order to manage your training efficiently. You can find the dates listed on the appropriate project page.

  • How much will it be?

You can find the project fees under the Book Now tab.

How do I book on?

  • How far in advance do I need to book on?

We require all those who join us to be medically cleared. This can take some time, so we recommend that you book at least two months in advance in order to allow plenty of time for this. If you are within this time frame already just get in touch and we can discuss it.

  • How long can I join you for?

Our project has a maximum stay of 3 weeks. We hope that in the future we can increase this, but while we run the first few expeditions in Sinai expeditions will be limited to 3 weeks if you are an unqualified diver, and 2 weeks if you are an AOW diver.

  • How do I book on?

Just complete the form on the booking page. This will come through to our Head Office. The Volunteer Coordinator will process your booking and will be in touch via email with your confirmation.

  • When do I pay?

We will ask you for a £275 deposit within 7 days of booking to hold your place. We will then ask for the outstanding balance to be paid 8 weeks before your start date. If you book on within this time frame, we shall of course give you more time, but we must receive your full payment before you arrive on site.

  • How do I pay?

We will send you our bank details for a BACs payment within your confirmation email. Otherwise you are welcome to give us a call and we can take a payment via debit/credit card over the phone.

  • Is a medical required to join?

We require all those who join us to complete and be cleared by the CCC medical. This is a simple 5-page document which you complete with your Dr or at a local clinic. We either clear these in house or if necessary send them to our external medical advisors for further clearance.

If you have an in date (within one year) sports diving medical, then it may be that we can accept this instead.

  • If I decide to cancel, will I lose my money?

Please see our Terms and Conditions for more details.

  • What paperwork is there?

We will ask you to complete a range of paperwork including (but not limited to) a medical form, PADI waivers, next of kin details and insurance information. We may also ask for scans of documents such as your passport and visa. This paperwork is designed to ensure that we can prepare site for your visit and provide all the support required during your stay.

You will also need to get in touch with SubSInai and make sure they have your PADI requirements, All diving material is organised with SubSinai, and you are responsible for contacting SubSinai and ensuring everything is organised.

How do I prepare for my project?

  • How do I find out about travel, visas, insurance etc?

Everything you need to know about the project, the site, travel, insurance, visas, equipment, money (and anything else we feel may be useful) can be found in the appropriate Project Guide. You can download this from the Volunteer area.

  • What clothes should I bring?

Generally, we recommend you bring enough clothes to last a few weeks. Most of your time will be spent in wetsuits and swimming clothing, so you just need a few T-shirts, modest shorts, clothes for cool evenings and a few nice outfits for eating out in restaurants. Please check the weather before packing as Dahab can be very windy and cold in winter months.

  • What equipment should I bring?

You can find all of the equipment listed in the appropriate Project Guide. If there is an additional item which you want to bring, and you aren't sure if it's necessary just give us a call and ask.

  • How much money do I need to bring?

Once you arrive on site you only need money for snacks, alcohol and soda, and any additional Sunday activities you wish to partake in. We have estimated a monthly budget to help you in the Project Guide.

  • What's included in the Project fee?

You can find this listed on the appropriate Project Volunteer page.

  • What vaccinations do I need?

This is the one area which we are not allowed to advise on. We recommend speaking to your GP and checking out the FitforTravel website which has the most up to date information on travel health.

  • Do I need travel/medical insurance?

Yes. You will need to provide your own travel and medical insurance for the duration of your stay. You can find details of what this needs to include in the Project Guide.

  • Can you arrange my flights?

No, we do not hold the required ATOL license. However, we are happy to advise on the most economical route.

  • Can I speak to any of the other project participants?

If you would like to touch base with the other participants that will be on site at the same time just let us know and we will send your contact details to them.

  • I'm new to diving, where can I get further information on brands etc?

Just get in touch. We are happy to advise on brands and suppliers and give you the pros and cons for different options of kit.

  • I've joined CCC before, can I miss the training?

We don't want you to have to redo training unnecessarily, but we also need to ensure the quality of our data collection, so this is entirely dependent on how long ago you joined us. Just give us a call and we can discuss it.

What does the training involve?

  • What PADI merchandise do I need to buy for my courses?

We include the cost of the required manuals and PICs (Digital certification pack lite versions) in the cost of the Open Water, Advanced Open Water, and Rescue course.

If you choose to undertake the Divemaster course, then you will need to purchase the PADI Divemaster Crewpack. If you are UK based, we can easily source this for you. If you are overseas this may be cheaper for you to source in your home country, just get in touch and ask.

  • Where can I source the required PADI merchandise?

We include the required PADI merchandise for the PADI Open Water, Advanced Open Water, and Rescue courses as 'lite' (PDF) versions in the course fee.

The Divemaster Crew Pack only comes in a hard copy version so if you are UK based we can easily source this for you. If you are overseas this may be cheaper for you to source in your home country, just get in touch and ask.

  • What is a PADI PIC?

This stands for Positive Identification Card. For each course that you undertake you will need a 'PIC' to certify it (apart from the Divemaster course).

  • Does the Divemaster course also require a PIC?

No, the Divemaster course requires you to register on an annual basis in order to remain in active teaching status. This annual registration runs from January - December and costs the same regardless of when you register so many new Divemasters (if certified near the end of the year) decide to delay registering until the new year.  You can discuss this in more detail with the Scuba Instructor on site.

  • Can I borrow by friends/family members manual instead?

Unfortunately, no. PADI standards dictate that all students must have their own set of manuals for reference purposes.

  • Can I do further dive courses?

Anyone who joins us for four weeks is welcome to undertake their Rescue course.

Anyone who joins us for twelve weeks is welcome to undertake their Divemaster course.

  • Do I need to do any dive revision before arriving on site?

It's not a requirement but if you are undertaking any dive courses it's great if you can complete some of the knowledge reviews before arriving on site. The quicker you complete the theory, the quicker you can get in the water!

  • Where can I find out about the Skills Development Programme?

You can find out about the SDP timetable in the Project Guide. Once you have booked on we will also furnish you with a project specific Science Workbook which will explain the methodology and species ID list in further detail to you.

  • Do I need to do any science revision before arriving on site?

We ask that you read through the Science Workbook (available once booked on) prior to your arrival to gain an understanding of the methodology and Species ID. Other than this we do not expect you to undertake any revision, however if you would like to then just get in touch and we'll point you towards some helpful books.

  • What if my diving qualification is through a different agency?

This is not a problem. Just check out our PADI Qualification Table to work out whether you need any training.

What about once I'm on site?

  • How much spending money should I have with me?

We have included a helpful guide on spending money in the Project Guide for you.

  • Can I extend my stay once on site?

Of course! As long as we have the availability and receive payment for the extension before its commencement then you would be welcome to extend with us.

  • Will it be possible to do laundry on site?

Of course, there are hand washing facilities on all sites. Just bring along some environmentally friendly clothes wash.

  • Can I be contacted whilst I am on the project site?

Projects are in rural areas and therefore communications can be basic. You can find out about your project's communication standards in the Project Guide.

There is a 24-hour emergency number detailed in the Project Guides which can be used by your parent/guardian in the event that they need to get hold of you in an emergency.

  • Can I borrow or rent any dive equipment on site?

Our Project Guides have an equipment list which advises you on what you will need to bring with you in order to partake in activities. Project sites are often in remote areas and we do not keep spare equipment on site, so it is very important that you bring all essential items with you.

  • What dive training will I receive?

All CCC participants are trained up to PADI Advanced Open Water (if required).  You are welcome to undertake further dive training with us up to Divemaster (minimum stay allowances apply).

  • What medical training will I receive?

Instead of PADI's Emergency First Response (EFR) course we will take you through the one-day Expedition Care Programme (ECP) course.

ECP is a First Aid course specially designed for expedition situations. The course covers more than EFR and is therefore accepted as fulfilling the EFR requirement of any PADI course.

  • How many dives a week will I do?

We have explained a 'typical week' in the Project Guide which clarifies the diving schedule.

  • Who will the staff be when I'm on site?

You can meet the current staff team on the Our Team page.
