What was the most exciting part of your scholarship placement? And what were your favourite moments?
There were so many exciting things that happened while I was a scholar in Napantao. Even if we followed a daily schedule and almost dived in the same area each day, you can never really know what you were going to see underwater or what the day has in store for you.
Breathing underwater for the first time was truly memorable. I never did a Discovery Scuba session, so my first immersion was really in Napantao. From the moment I sank and started blowing bubbles, I knew I was going to be hooked. The Napantao dive site spoiled me. And I didn’t realize how lucky I was to be diving in such a magical place until I left.
My first night dive was exciting and terrifying at the same time. A cuttlefish welcomed me in the darkness. I almost exited the water when I saw it swim towards me. I had never seen a cuttlefish before and it looked a lot like an alien, so that freaked me out for a moment. Now, I love night diving and get excited over cuttlefishes and all the weird creatures in the sea.
Being a scholar was so fun that if they offered for me to stay longer, I would have said yes. I have so many favourite moments and I could go on and on with the stories, but it is not the same as experiencing it for yourself!
What would you say to people thinking of applying to Coral Cay Conservations scholarship programmeme? Any words of wisdom or advice!?
To be honest, I was worried that my background in business put me at a disadvantage when I applied. Surely more Filipinos who were studying marine science or was into conservation was more deserving to be part of this cool programme?
But I tried anyway, and sent in my application. And a week later, I received an email saying I was accepted!
If there was one thing the programme has taught me, it was that ocean conservation is for everyone. We can all do our own part and contribute in our own way.
Being a Filipino scholar in CCC has been life changing for me. It is among my top favorite things I have done in my life.
While the programme was an amazing overall experience, just brace yourself for a month of simple living. The comforts you might be used to might be temporarily taken away from you. But, trust me, it’s worth it!
Yes, there were plenty of inconveniences for being in such a remote location, but once you start diving everyday in the one of the most beautiful reefs in the Philippines, you will forget all your troubles. You might never want to leave!
If you’re curious to know what happens in the one month programme, you can read a more detailed blog on my website to know more about my experience as a Filipino dive scholar
Since finishing your scholarship with Coral Cay Conservation, where has life taken you? How have the skills and experience received from the scholarship benefited you since graduating?
After finishing my scholarship with Coral Cay Conservation, I went back to running my business. Every chance I got to travel, I made sure to go to places that had diving. I’ve gone diving in Malaysia, Indonesia, and Australia, but I have to say that diving in the Philippines will always be my favourite.
My love for the ocean has led me to pursue a lifelong dream of having a blog for my dive adventures. In 2019, I launched DiverBliss.com , a scuba diving, ocean conservation, and sustainable travel website. I was in the process of blogging my way through 20 of the best dive locations in the Philippines, when it was cut short because of the pandemic.
While stuck at home, PhilippineDives.com was born. The vision for this website is to create an information and directory hub for scuba divers and freedivers in the Philippines. I want to make it easier for divers around the world to find the most up to date information about diving in the Philippines. The platform also aims to help the local dive businesses and ocean conservation groups to easily reach the communities they serve.
My experience in Coral Cay Conservation has been instrumental in this journey I am now on. I will forever be grateful for the people and the place where it all began.
I hope that through the two websites that I’m creating, I can inspire more people to start diving and loving the ocean as much as I do. I believe that divers are one of the biggest ocean advocates and if I could get at least one more person to go diving. Then, I think it can make all the difference for our oceans.
