3) What was it about Coral Cay Conservation that made you decide to apply for the Scholarship programme?
Prior to Coral Cay, I was doing more general development work and organizing for government and non-profit organizations. I actually joined Coral Cay to pursue a career track more aligned with my interests in environmental management. I’ve always believed that our communities are the best managers of their own resources and these resources can be equitably shared if small folks are more involved in decision-making processes. In my undergrad, I dabbled in many topics related to fisheries social science. In fact, I wrote an undergrad dissertation on fish workers in the commercial fishing industry, so marine resource management is something I was always into. I discovered Coral Cay Conservation through a Google search in 2011 when I was still a college teen looking for local volunteer opportunities. The right time to go came five years later when I took the decision to apply
to get more specialized training so I can do more environment-related engagements. I quit my government job, packed my bags, hopped on my cranky bicycle and cycled to Southern Leyte.
4) What was the most exciting part of your scholarship placement? And what were your favourite moments?
My body isn’t exactly built for highly physical activities so I struggled in getting comfortable with diving at first. I even had an emotional moment with our Expedition Manager at that time, when we thought I may not be able to complete the entire training phase. Completing it was a really huge win for me! I found the intensive science training to be quite enjoyable, probably my favorite. To recognize and put a name to the creatures you see underwater and make sense of how these unique creatures and sentient beings figure in the overall web of life was a whole new magical experience by itself. To top it off, Napantao is a surreal outdoor classroom.
There were many majestic sunsets, beers starting 6:00PM, fun games that involved “killing” people and finding “killers” and dinner-time elections, often contested, to declare the “dick-of-the-day”. I was also lucky to join a large group of diverse volunteers and staff. There was a volunteer, Rachel, that to this day I just don’t forget because she was just too funny and energetic. There were many great characters in both my 2016 and 2017 stays. The Coral Cay base is a family of good people to share good conversations, antics and good laughs with.
5) What would you say to people thinking of applying to Coral Cay Conservations scholarship programme? Any words of wisdom or advice!?
Professionally, CCC is a perfect career step to gain skills and experience in underwater biophysical survey, or in conservation in general, if this is something one would like to pursue. When developed, it can open exciting opportunities to work and/or volunteer in actual conservation projects outside of CCC. Especially for people with no prior background, it does open a new set of lens to understand life here in this planet. Conservation too needs communicators, organizers, artists, policy analysts, etc. to bridge environmental agendas with the needs of the people, if protection is to be successful, so no matter the background, it always pays to try.
It has to be said though that whether you are looking to work in this field or not, staying in the Coral Cay base is an entire experience in itself that will stick with you. Southern Leyte is a really beautiful and rustic place -- clean rivers, quiet beaches, small villages where people live simply and work hard. It felt like taking a step back in time. Living with local and foreign staff and volunteers also felt really rewarding for cultural exchange, for knowing
other people’s interests, experiences and points of view. In all these possible experiences, you just have to allow your curiosity to run wild, be present in the moment and persevere during the learning process.
6) Since finishing your scholarship with Coral Cay Conservation, where has life taken you? How have the skills and experience received from the scholarship benefited you since graduating?
Coral Cay gave me functional skills to pivot more towards community-based marine management. Since Coral Cay in 2016 and 2017, I have been doing mostly conservation and environmental advocacy work – I’ve since run several community projects of a similar marine expedition program, taught hundreds of children about the marine environment in schools and camps, trained foreign volunteers in organizing for coastal management, worked in fisheries research, went to graduate school, furthered my dive education, organized many advocacy events with friends, worked with local government units and communities in improving legal frameworks and coastal management programs, helped establish agro-fishery enterprises and surveyed/traveled/dived in different parts of the Philippines, which I never imagined I would have had the opportunity to otherwise do. The scholarship was really instrumental in throwing me deeper into the field!
