3) What was it about Coral Cay Conservation that made you decide to apply for the scholarship programme?
The Philippines, being an archipelago, has some of the most diverse marine ecosystems in the world. This diversity made the country a world favorite, not just as an area for scientific research, but also as a haven for tourist diving. Also, the Philippines has a strong fishing culture where a large number of its people are engaged in fishing and fisheries activities. These factors greatly affect the condition of our oceans. It made me realize that if I’m going to do something with what I have, I might as well do something for the environment.
I was always amazed by the underwater world. Learning more about the ocean was just so engaging. I saw the scholarship as an opportunity to establish a good foundation for conservation and sustainable development. Given that I was at the time working with the government and was doing projects that involved engagement with local communities, it is a good step to take.
Up until now, I’m still learning a lot of things and trying to find solutions and opportunities to do something to address environmental issues. The learning never stops.
4) What was the most exciting part of your scholarship placement? And what were your favourite moments?
It was an interesting place to be spending time. I was lucky enough to have two more Filipino scholars with me. We were staying in a private area by the sea. Besides diving, we spent the day mostly studying, learning our science, and practicing our dive skills. We would end the night pretty early with the sounds of the waves and the chirping of the crickets putting us to sleep. During still nights, we would take a stroll to the end of the seawall and watch a tree full of fireflies. A perfect way to end the day.
Things were always exciting on site! There was a lot of new stuff to learn, together with amazing days of diving! The staff did a great job of keeping us engaged and made us feel at home! I would say the best moment was when we started doing the surveys! It was very fulfilling to finally put all our science and diving training into good use!
5) What would you say to people thinking of applying to Coral Cay Conservations scholarship programme? Any words of wisdom or advice!?
Being involved with the CCC took me further, not just with my career but also with my personal endeavors. I was curious but was also scared to death by the idea of diving. I still remember the very first time I officially did my first dive then proceeded to do the mask recovery skill. I thought that it was the end of me for a second there. Once I got a hang of it, I eventually enjoyed every moment!
Do not be afraid to explore in terms of the things that you can do. If an opportunity comes, and it feels right, go ahead and grab it. CCC was my turning point. It gave me the chance to do more, and experience more. Given the environmental issues the world is currently facing, we must realize that we need more people who can be capable of doing something to address these issues. It doesn’t matter which one you feel more inclined towards – waste disposal and recycling, non-violent action, sustainability, conservation, or scientific research. Take your pick. So long as it leads us to a better future.
6) Since finishing your scholarship with Coral Cay Conservation, where has life taken you? How have the skills and experience received from the scholarship benefited you since graduating?
After finishing my training in CCC, I went back to working on sustainable tourism, planning, project implementation, and government policies. Eventually, I had the chance to work on coastal resource management. It opened more opportunities for doing community-based projects, empowerment, and training foreign volunteers who came to work in the Philippines. At the moment I am the site manager for a marine conservation organization on the island of Malapascua in Cebu. I work with a mix of local and foreign staff, and manage volunteer expeditions. We have done great progress with our community-oriented approach. Having a good training background from CCC provided a good foundation for me. With this, I can continue to share my contribution to the collective action on marine conservation, and I want to do more of it in the years to come.
