TEAM ONE:
Wednesday:
At the beginning of July we were joined at Napantao by 20 girls and their teachers from a UK school. They arrived Wednesday at noon and were immediately greeted by all members of the CCC staff, ready to show them all to their rooms and serve a well prepared home-cooked meal after their long travel from the UK. The rest of the day was spent settling in to the new surroundings and enjoying one of the many beautiful sunsets that we enjoy each evening from site.
Thursday :
The day started with an introduction to CCC and the conservation work we do on site, the students also received a lecture on local animals and plants and how to interact or react in the case of an encounter. Following was a lecture on plastic and the impact it causes on our environment, along with suggestions on how to improve our everyday life to minimise the plastic footprint we all leave. We couldn't let another day go by without showing our lovely visitors the beautiful reef that lies just outside our doorstep, so after a swimming test the team jumped in for a snorkel.
Friday:
Early in the morning we received plastic collected from the local villages, which we cleaned and dried so that we could use it for EcoBricks later in the week. Following was a trip to the beach in Anilao for a beach clean, during which we collected a total of 115 kg during our two hours' effort! Most of our visitors were shocked by the amount of plastics that can be found in nature already. When we returned to our campsite some of the plastics was rinsed and used to craft a creative decoration that would show the ocean and the impact of plastics.
Saturday :
Our informative training programme started today with an introduction to what we do here at CCC, a brief explanation of how we do our surveys and what other projects we have here e.g. Seastars and Reef rangers, our two programmes which seek to educate and inspire the local communities. We then gave all a little taster of how it feels to scuba dive. This was done by having them breath through a regulator with their head submerged in a water tank. They were all pleasantly surprised by how easy it is to breath under water! The day continued with a condensed lecture on some of the fishes we survey, followed by an invertebrate lecture. The group were tested on their skills with a game involving racing each other to see who could collect flash cards on the right creatures first! We ended the session with a lecture on substrates while showing skeletons of some of the coral species we have on the house reef. In the evening the group went to the local village to play basketball – we were so pleased at how engaged the students were and all returned to site after a long day for a well-deserved sleep!
Sunday
:
The day started with a quick walk to the local village to join the local community for Sunday prayers. After our return to the campsite, the day was spent in the water, looking at all the creatures and substrate we had gone through in lectures yesterday. Some of the ladies already knew many species and were able to identify them. Later in the afternoon many mentioned how nice it was to be able to tell what the fishes were, how they interacted and what they mean to a healthy reef. When not snorkelling, groups were working hard on their presentations to give for the local school next week.
Monday:
This day the ladies were split into three groups, doing different things throughout the day. One group would start with a deep clean of the campsite (not very exciting we know but a necessary part of expedition life), then onto a guided snorkel adventure on the house reef, followed by cooking the meal for everyone for lunch. Later in the afternoon we went to the local beach in Napantao to use sieves and investigate for microplastics in the sand and water. luckily, we found very little, but the message still came across – that no matter how big or small a piece of plastic we introduce into nature, it’ll stay!
We had a chat on the beach about how important it is to be aware of your own mark on your surroundings and how you can minimalise your imprint. In the evening following our dinner one of the ladies did a Zumba class for the rest which spread lots of laughs, followed by a relaxed meditation session. To celebrate one of our student's birthdays, we all watched Finding Nemo while enjoying a lovely chocolate cake made by the incredible site chef, Nan Pedang.
Tuesday:
Today was spent cutting old plastic posters into long pieces to use them for filling plastic bottles for Ecobricks. All of these bricks are currently being used by the students to build a much needed community toilet block. Over the next two days the students will split into teams and head to the building site in Napantao to put all of their EcoBricks to use!
Wednesday:
The final day of working at the building site for this group. It was a rainy morning, but all soldiered through and we finished the wall we set out to do, mission accomplished! We all had the pleasure of mixing cement, layering the bricks and mounting the eco-bricks on top.
Metal rebar is cut into sections to be mounted within the brick wall to support the added EcoBricks on top of the structure. It takes teamwork to get the right length of the metal and saw it into suitable sections.
The picture below shows how the EcoBricks are mounted on top of the cement section and stabilised between metal nets that are tightened around the bottles with thin metal wire.
Getting ready for the mixing! We need shovels, buckets of water, sand and cement! It can be a bit of a challenge to get the right ratio. especially when rainwater is added to the equation – but there’s nothing the team can’t handle! Here at CCC – safety comes before everything, so we have gloves, masks, proper boots and glasses at the ready!
Even Miles, the expedition leader is giving a hand with the mixing!
The group made sure to put their mark on one wall, here are all the names written on one EcoBrick. Plus, an extra little message from our birthday lady today!
Thursday :
Today is the day we will all go to Napantao School to present what we have learned and done over the last week! Each group created a presentation inspired by each section of the training lectures (Invertebrates, Fishes and Substrate), along with some fun games for the school children to engage in.
In the afternoon we went to Jubilee Beach near Napantao to enjoy a different, but equally stunning view as we have from the CCC camp. It was a very hot afternoon, but regardless our two trusted guard dogs came along on the trek, least to say they were both feeling very warm when we arrived, so much so that Coral allowed us to make her into a mermaid sculpture (she enjoyed the cool sand). We ended the day with a lovely outdoor dinner to the most vibrant pink sunset!
Friday:
The last day before this group will leave us – it is sad to know that we will have to say goodbye! It has been such a pleasure to have every single one here and they will all be greatly missed! We spent the day cleaning and packing, and had time for one last snorkel and lecture in the morning! There is always time for science and snorkelling ;)!
We wish the whole group safe travels and great adventures for the rest of their stay in the Philippines!
