Every month at Coral Cay Conservation, we survey a coral reef at a different barangay (i.e. village) around Sogod Bay, Philippines. The data we collect on these surveys are generally used for one of two purposes: the first is to recommend the best area for the implementation of a Marine Protected Area (MPA), the second is to assess already existing MPAs to determine if they are being effective at protecting marine life. Once we have analysed the data and written a report, it is imperative to disseminate this information to the relevant barangay so that those who have received recommendations can decide where they should implement an MPA, and those that already have an MPA can understand whether it is working effectively.
Over the last two months, our Project Scientist, Dr Chantel Elston, has visited three different barangays (Himbangan, Santa Paz Norte, Manglit) to deliver the results of the surveys conducted at these barangays. Chantel met with a mix of local council members, barangay officials, and fishermen and delivered visual PowerPoint presentations to communicate the most important findings of our report.
Two of the barangays already had existing MPAs so Chantel highlighted the differences in marine life both within and outside the MPAs. For the third barangay, there was no MPA so Chantel highlighted the best area that we recommend for an MPA. This recommendation was met with a positive attitude so we hope that the barangay will move forward with the recommendation and implement an MPA.
With these presentations, we communicate the importance of protecting marine life to local people so that fisheries can be sustainable, and livelihoods can be conserved. Also, by showing local people images of what their reefs look like, we hope to instil a sense of pride in their local reefs. Ocean protection begins from the ground up and by turning everyday fishermen into ocean advocates, we can make a real change.
At the beginning of September, we surveyed the MPA at Catig so at the end of September, Chantel and a volunteer, Satoko, headed off to Catig for a Community Day. Community Days are events where we can connect with the local people who live in the barangay and communicate with them about why we surveyed the reefs in the MPA.
Chantel delivered a visual PowerPoint presentation to a mix of barangay officials, fisherfolk, and children. In the presentation, she spoke about the importance of MPAs, and the Before After Control Impact (BACI) study we are currently conducting at CCC. In this study, we compare sites before and after they became MPAs, as well as comparing MPAs to areas that did not become MPAs. Using these comparisons, we can determine if local MPAs are being effective at protecting marine life. Catig is an impact site, meaning that it became an MPA after we surveyed the area and recommended an MPA.
Chantel showed the local people several photos that were taken from their reef, which was met with much interest and enjoyment. Additionally, her and Satoko taught the children the underwater symbols we use to identify different types of fish. Overall, it was a day of education and some fun, enjoyed by all.
