Last week we welcomed two new Dive Trainees to our Philippines base; Andres and Carmelo (Melo). Andres is already an open water qualified diver but has been out of the water for a couple of years – but was certainly eager to get back amongst the hustle and bustle of the reef! On the other hand, Melo had never tried scuba diving before and, although slightly nervous, was very excited about getting started!
Due to the weather, we had to venture to the pacific side of Panoan Island; to Anilao. As we are currently in Philippines Habagat season, the weather can be slightly unpredictable which can cause last minute adjustments to our schedules, especially if we are scheduled to dive on our house reef; Napantao. The first two days of our new team's dive training were undertaken at Anilao which provides a practical sandy floor making it perfect for PADI skills training.
Due to the differing substrate composition and topography of Anilao, in comparison to Napantao, it always proves to be an exciting site to dive due to the variety of fishes and invertebrates that are seldom encountered on our house reef. So even though it isn’t our beloved house reef, Anilao is always an exciting alternative! Furthermore, with the calmer conditions this time of the year, it's a great opportunity to fine tune our macro-photography skills (and of course, identification skills!).
After a few days, the weather started to clear, and we were able to continue Melo’s course on our house reef. With the immanent introduction to Napantao, excitement started to build amongst our Team and dive trainees, giving rise to many conversations about the diverse variety of fishes, invertebrates and substrates. And the reef, as per usual, did not disappoint!
In two days, we saw three Hawksbill Turtles ( Eretmochelys imbricata ), lots of juvenile Longfin Spadefish ( Platax teira ), almost all of our key species Butterflyfishes ( Chaetodon spp. ), our trusted teenage Midnight Snapper ( Macolor macularis ) and lots and lots of Parrotfish ( Scaridae), Surgeons (Acanthuridae), Anemonefish ( Amphiprion spp. ) and, love them or hate them, a Titan Triggerfish ( Balistoides viridescens )!
Our house reef is
always full of surprises and is a great introduction for any new divers!
Once Melo had mastered his Open Water skills, (and may we add – with ease), Andres and Melo were equipped to continue to the advanced course – perfecting buoyancy skills before they join our survey teams!
We're grateful to able to give Melo his first experience of diving, and what an amazing place to make that introduction. Throughout his Open Water, Melo was a fantastic student, and we have no doubt he will make a great diver! If you would like to follow in Melo's footsteps (or fins), find out how you can join us in the Philippines here!
