One of the exciting things that happened last month was that we welcomed Carmelo Urbanes as our monthly scholar. Carmelo, who has received a Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of Philippines, is currently working for the Naval Research and Technology Development Center. He quickly completed our Skills Development Program and became a highly competent coral reef surveyor - so much so that he even led two survey dives! He successfully completed his PADI Open Water and Advanced Open Water courses with us, despite having no prior diving experience.
Last month, we ran a number of different PADI scuba diving courses on base. In addition to our monthly scholar, we had a short-term volunteer, Andres, complete his AdvancedOpen Water course. After some trepidation in the beginning due to an injury that prevented him from diving for a long time, Andres quickly rebuilt his confidence in the water. We also had another volunteer, Ana, complete her Rescue Diver course on base. Overall, it has been a busy month of dive training!
We also had our boat captain of ten years, Bok, decide to retire from his duties with us and move to the other side of Sogod Bay to chase new opportunities. Fortunately, Ricky had been Bok’s assistant for almost as long as Bok has been our boat captain. We have thus proudly promoted Ricky to be our new boat captain, something he has been training for for a long time! During our Catig survey, we had three different men spend the day with us on the boat to see how well they get along. Ricky will choose one of them, who will be trained and employed by CCC as the new boat assistant.
In 2017, CCC conducted an assessment of the Marine Protected Area (MPA) at Himbangan. Last month, our Project Scientist (Chantel) presented and delivered the results to the council. The results highlighted a lack of large commercially important species inside the MPA suggesting that the MPA was not being effective, potentially due to poaching. However, there were significantly larger abundances of invertebrates and hard corals within the MPA, which suggests the potential for this MPA to be effective under correct management. The council was receptive to the presentation and was thankful that we conducted this assessment and updated them on how their MPA was performing.
In August, the Catig survey was successfully completed! Using the newly adopted BACI (Before-After-Control-Impact) approach, Catig was the second impact site in Liloan to be surveyed in 2019. The team at CCC have completed surveying all six transects within the MPA, with various fish, substrates and invertebrate species identified. From branching corals that looked like underwater coral gardens, to juvenile fish hiding between corals, to colourful nudibranchs that have previously not been seen before, our whole team loved the beauty of this MPA!
This is an exciting time for CCC as the results from the BACI surveys provide a unique opportunity to utilise baseline data that aims to provide resource managers critical data on the performance of their MPAs.
The Monthly Project Update (MPU) is a report written for our stakeholders to be kept up-to-date on the projects and activities being carried out at our site. This is just a snapshot, if you are interested, you can check out the full MPU here.
