As our previous volunteer, Andres, and national scholar, Melo, finalised their Advanced Open Water PADI dive training, we welcomed two more volunteers to the Philippines family; Naomi and Ana. After their travel from Tacloban to our remote field base in Barangay Napantao
, and an introduction to their new home for the next month or so, our Science Officer, Charlotte, jumped straight into our Skills Development Programme (SDP).
SDP is a fascinating and practical training course designed to give our volunteers and scholars all the knowledge and skills that are required to assess the health of coral reefs and guide the establishment of Marine Protected Areas. Volunteers first receive a grounding in coral reef ecology and learn about CCC's role in country, followed by how to identify key fish, invertebrates and coral lifeforms, delving into underwater survey techniques. Delivered by our highly enthusiastic and knowledgeable science staff, volunteers will be upside down hovering inches above the reef with ease, amongst the memorising fauna, in no time!
It is an intense, but highly rewarding, two weeks and by the end of the programme, volunteers find themselves being able to identify and relate to the species that habituate the reefs of the Philippines. Long gone are the days casually diving coral reefs as our volunteers are introduced to a new world of specific behaviours and processes as the reef transforms into a flurry of taxonomic names that dart in front of your scuba mask, seek refuge within coral colonies or lurk on the edge of your peripheral!
Next week, the team will back out onto our House Reef to begin practising data collection techniques and survey protocols. Once they have these mastered, they will head out Barangay Catig to collect critical bio-physical to support our Before-After-Control-Impact study! Catig always gets people excited as it has been known to be visited by the Ocean's largest fish; the Whale Shark. Catig is also often home to some Triton's Trumpet which are incredibly rare to observe in Sogod Bay due to over exploitation - to give you an idea, we've been at Napantao since 2008 and we can count the number of observations on one hand!
