This month has been a busy whirlwind for us at Coral Cay Conservation. All of our usual activities went out the window as we happily hosted three separate school groups from The Holt School and George Abbot, England for the month of July. This Monthly Project Update will therefore follow a different format to normal and will provide you with some of the fun highlights that has happened over the last month.
The first two groups Coral Cay Conservation hosted were from The Holt School. Each group stayed with us for 10 days; the first group was made up of 20 excited teenage girls, the second group had slightly less at 17 girls. Everybody was a bit reserved and quiet at the start, but as time went by the students came out of their shells and we had a great time getting to know all of their personalities.
Their time spent with us was taken up by a variety of activities. One of the main tasks for the students was to build the outer walls of a toilet facility next to the local basketball court here in Barangay Napantao using Eco-Bricks. We undertook numerous beach cleans to collect plastic, which we cleaned and cut up into small pieces to create as many Eco-Bricks as possible. The Eco-Bricks were then used, in conjunction with hollow blocks and concrete, to build the outside walls of the toilet. Each student gained valuable skills and knowledge during this process, including how to mix cement, how to lay hollow blocks, and how to place Eco-Bricks securely. The students were very proud to see their work come together over the time that they were here.
The students were provided with several lectures
to teach them about the importance of what we do here at Coral Cay
Conservation. They learned how to identify many of the different fishes,
invertebrates and corals that can be found our coral reef surveys. All of their
newly acquired identification skills were put to the test through lots of
snorkelling! The girls then utilised their knowledge to create their own
presentations about life on coral reefs. These presentations, accompanied with
some fun activities, were delivered to the local Napantao School so that the students
could pass on the knowledge they had gained to the local school children.
This school group was different to the first two as these students were here to learn how to scuba dive! Twelve teenagers arrived with very excited and expectant smiles. Two separate PADI Open Water courses as well as an Advanced Open Water course was run for the students. Unfortunately, due to bad weather and boat issues we could only dive one day on our beautiful Napantao House Reef, the rest of the dives were conducted at Anilao where the sea was much calmer. Despite the shift in location, the students very much enjoyed learning all the skills on their scuba-diving courses. By the end we managed to qualify 10 new divers!
Going forward into August, life at Coral Cay Conservation will return to normal. We are planning to survey the Marine Protected Area in Catig for our BACI (Before-After-Control-Impact) study. This study aims to assess the effectiveness of currently established MPA’s. We have 6 sites, 3 of which have an established MPA (Impact Sites) and 3 of which do not have an MPA but have been historically surveyed by CCC (control sites). By re-visiting these sites and surveying their reefs, we can compare the data for the site with protection and those without to understand the benefits of MPA implementation in Sogod Bay. We will also welcome our scholar for the month, Carmelo Urbanes, as well as three volunteers.
