Sunday:
A day after waving farewell to the first Adventure Lifesigns UK school group we welcomed the next! The team had had a long day's travel so the first day was a chance to settle in and get a good nights' rest before the work started!
Monday:
Today brought a whole day of introduction to CCC and the marine science we practice here at the project site. The team were taught about the plastics in our oceans and started learning about EcoBricks , we even got round to making some ourselves.
Tuesday:
Marine science training day! Today covered an adapted and condensed version of the lectures that we normally teach new CCC volunteers and scholars during their first two weeks here in Napantao with Coral Cay Conservation. It was an intense day, broken up with a (sort of) test scuba dive (where they can test how it feels to breath through a regulator with their head submerged in a water tank), a “find the correct invert” flashcard race and a yummy lunch. When we asked all our lovely students to come up with ideas for presentations when we revisit the local school in Napantao next week they were all glad to finally be able to turn their new knowledge into creative artworks. The focus and concentration were indeed felt throughout the site!
Wednesday:
Unfortunately, the weather has turned today and Habagat (annual monsoon) is passing through. This mean that we have had to alter our schedule slightly, so we won’t go on our snorkels just yet – but instead travelled to Anilao to continue the beach clean the previous group had started. They did us proud, with lots of hard work and we collected several bags!
The students made some beautiful collages out of the rubbish that was collected, and everyone had a giggle over the wonderful 'mermaid' that was created out of the material that otherwise would sadly be a part of our oceans today.
Thursday, Friday and Saturday:
The next three days the school group was separated into three smaller groups, to switch between either continuing the work from the last group, building a communal restroom in Napantao; creating EcoBricks for the builders to use; or visiting our neighbouring beach to ensure that we contribute to keeping our community clean and plastic free! There were also the rather less exciting, but very important, house chores to complete to keep our site running smoothly. Most importantly, the water calmed down a bit and we could all go out for some much anticipated snorkelling! But first we had a swim test!
Sunday:
Today we all had a gentle day – we spent most of the day either snorkelling or finalising the presentations for tomorrow to give at Napantao school. The ladies showed us all the species names and knowledge that they had accumulated during their stay here – both in their presentation, but also remembering the names of substrates and fishes on our snorkels.
Monday:
This morning we all went to Napantao School to present our activities, games and talks about marine life and conservation.
Later in the afternoon we all went to the, now almost finished, restroom to decorate it with images of marine life! A turtle, whale shark, reef and an example of EcoBricks were all featured. This was followed by a walk to Jubilee beach and later in the evening a bonfire with lots of marshmallows.
Tuesday:
Today we had our last lecture on the relationship between mangroves, sea grass and coral reefs – and later, just before all the cleaning and packing, one last snorkel.
Some of us were so lucky that we saw both a little turtle (hurrying away from the snorkelers) and a sea krait just feeding quietly in between the coral reef.
Wednesday:
It's been an intense few weeks with these 2 groups but we’ve all enjoyed it to the fullest!
Thank you for joining us ladies and working so hard to help our local community. It's been a pleasure having you on site. Enjoy the rest of your time in the Philippines!
