We couldn’t have asked for a better week!
Last week we surveyed at a marine protected area called Nueve Estrella Norte, almost an hour south of base by boat. With flat calm seas and some tantalising early-morning glimpses of whalesharks near our house reef, we had our fingers crossed we might spot some from the boat. Wildlife can be tricky though and never seems to turn up when you expect it, so we were super excited when the cry went up from our boat captain Ricky: “WHALESHARK!”. This set off a scramble for masks and snorkels while the shark disappeared under the water again for a tense few minutes. This happened a few times until it swam right up behind the boat so we cut the engines and jumped right in. While we were very careful to be as quiet as possible getting into the water to avoid spooking it, I think we were probably still an unexpected sight so after a brief encounter it swam off into the depths. None of us had seen one before so it was still an incredible experience.
A couple of days later we were on our way back from survey again when a few dark shapes were spotted in the distance. As we got nearer it was clear to see a large pod (40+) of short-finned pilot whales who were heading into Sogod Bay, accompanying us for a while. Pilot whales are actually part of the oceanic dolphin ( Delphinidae ) family and are closely related to killer whales. Even though they are pretty large (5-7m) we spotted a few leaping out of the water just like other dolphins. How special!
Survey successfully complete by Saturday, we took the Sunday off in a bid to find more whalesharks. We headed out in a couple of small boats, going north this time past Liloan, where whalesharks can sometimes be spotted from the bridge. Ricky knew exactly the spot and after some time searching, a dark shape a fair bit larger than our boat loomed up from below. We hopped in and had a magical swim with a very relaxed whaleshark, who we think may have been pregnant from the size of her (shown on the left below). We got back on the boats thinking that was it for the day, but 10 minutes later another was spotted, this one even larger! It was in the area to feed, and we could actually see the zooplankton in the water that the shark was feeding on – it still amazes me that something so large can exist on eating the smallest animals in the oceans. This second whaleshark had a scar on its mouth and notch out of its tail, possibly as a result of boat propellers, a sober reminder that these gentle giants can be at risk from boat traffic. This one seemed fine though and was certainly eating to its heart’s content.
That would have been more than enough excitement for one day but while we were in the water, a third, smaller whaleshark also came to say hello. Overall we were in the water with them for over an hour, a truly magical experience and one we will never forget.
To top it off, on the Monday we were kitting up for a dive on our house reef, when another whaleshark was spotted near south wall – the location we were about to dive! I’ve never seen people get ready so quickly. We got on the boat and jumped in for a snorkel with this smaller whaleshark before diving on our beautiful reef.
What an amazing final week for the outgoing staff team, Chantel, Charlotte and Scoob, and lovely volunteer Pallavi, and a great start to the season for the rest of us.
